Got my base m4 mini a few days ago and i'm slightly disappointed with its hardware encoding performance using handbrake I tired a constant bitrate with 1 pass and 2 pass encoding to see if it would go, both just get stuck at 100.00% and the file will grow until you force quit handbrake. The 2020 intel imac with a basic i5 10500/radeon pro 5300 encodes.
The m1 hw encoding using handbrake is very fast, but the file size is way too big for my needs It is likely to require quite a bit of effort and perhaps moving some external dependencies into static ones for exclusive usage by handbrake (or otherwise patch a lot for compatibility. It is hard to get an objective apples to apples comparison when it comes to quality of handbrake's sw and hw encoding settings, but when i tried to get a similar quality encode handbrake sw and hw encoding, the file size of the hw encode was a lot.
The reason the apple tv preset in handbrake sets track 1 to aac and track 2 to ac3 is because that's how the files from apple are
Handbrake just replicate's apple's videos for the apple tv. I'm working on building my digital collection of movies and want to digitize a bunch of old dvds i have I have a dvd usb player and an m1 pro mbp I used handbrake back in the day on my old intel mac to do this, but i haven't used handbrake in probably a decade now
Is that still the best app. The general consensus at this point is that handbrake software encoding produces better quality results, compared to hardware encoding (which is faster though), so i wouldn't put my bet on that personally That being said, even if handbrake is priority, i wouldn't use it as a reason to go for the m4 pro Figured i would post these results, as some folks are looking for some real world intel vs apple silicon results
It should be possible to resurrect the version of handbrake which supported powerpc via github commit history and possibly update some components for it then
